The Punjab State Commission for Scheduled Castes on Thursday directed the state education and welfare departments to provide textbooks to the students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes within a week.

It has also asked the departments to furnish compliance report on June 9 after providing the books to the students.

Commission chairman Rajesh Bagha said it has come to his notice that the students belonging to reserved categories were not provided the textbooks despite the start of the academic session a month ago.

"Non-delivery of books directly affects the studies of the student," he said.

Punjab School Education Board joint secretary J.R. Mehrookh assured the chairman that the remaining books, including for mathematics, Punjabi, supplementary reader English and grammar, will be supplied shortly.
