French football club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) announced on Thursday that coach Laurent Blanc has extended his contract for two years until the end of June 2018.

The former coach of the French football team, who was part of France's 1998 World Cup-winning squad, joined the club in June 2013 replacing Italian Carlo Ancelotti, who left for Spanish giants Real Madrid, reports Efe.

"Of course, it's a strong show of faith, and I'm very happy, also for my staff. A coach is nothing without his staff," Blanc said in a statement.

"For us, continuing the adventure is a show of faith but also a big responsibility," said the former France defender, expressing his confidence to help PSG to be a brilliant and respected ambassador of French football.

PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi said he was "extremely proud and happy" with the extension.

"It was important to us that he be a continuing part of Paris Saint-Germain's plans."

"He has obtained excellent results since his arrival and has already won eight trophies with us, which is quite simply formidable," al-Khelaifi added.

"All the conditions for stability are met and I have always had a lot of faith in Laurent Blanc," the club president explained.
