Prof Raj Kumar, a senior academician from the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), will be the new Vice Chancellor of Panjab University here, it was announced on Saturday.
Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu issued the appointment letter on Saturday in New Delhi.
His tenure will be for three years.
Raj Kumar is presently Dean and Head of Institute of Management Studies of BHU in Varanasi.
The outgoing Vice Chancellor, Arun Kumar Grover, was on the post for two terms spanning six years. His tenure ends on July 22.
Set up in 1882 and one of the oldest universities in the country, PU's renowned alumni includes former Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and Inder Kumar Gujral, former President Shankar Dayal Sharma, Nobel laureate Hargobind Khurana, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, NASA astronaut Kalpana Chawla (who died in the space shuttle Columbia disaster in 2001), senior Congress leader Manish Tewari, Union Minister Rajiv Partap Rudy, former Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
