Following deaths due to the Nipah virus reported from Kerala, the Rajasthan government on Wednesday directed health officials and other to take steps to check the spread of the virus in the desert state.

"There are many people from Rajasthan who reside in Kerala and keep visiting their native state frequently. The need of the hour is to remain alert," said Health Minister Kalicharan Saraf.

The Nipah virus (NiP) has so far claimed 10 lives in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts of Kerala. Authorities on Wednesday said the virus had been contained and there was no need to panic.

The Nipah virus is spread by fruit bats and can be passed by an infected person to another.

"Hence, public awareness need to be created on the health issue," the Minister added.

Saraf directed the Additional Chief Secretary, Medical and Health Department and other officials to ensure adequate preventive steps against the virus.
