Rajiv Mehrishi, who retired as Union Home Secretary on Wednesday, has been appointed as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, sources said on Thursday.

Senior IAS officer Rajiv Gauba on Thursday took charge as the Union Home Secretary.

Mehrishi, a 1978-batch Rajasthan cadre IAS officer, will replace incumbent Shashi Kant Sharma who will complete his term as the country's top auditor by September-end.

Born on September 25, 1952, Sharma assumed the office in May 2013.

Considering Mehrishi's clean image, he was among the top choice of the government for the post of CAG, the sources said, adding a formal order on this is expected to be announced by the Finance Ministry soon.

The CAG is appointed for a term of six years.

The CAG is primarily entrusted with the responsibility to audit the accounts of the Union government and of the state governments and its reports are laid before Parliament and legislatures of the states.
