Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh Friday distributed additional compensation cheques to families of 17 people, who were victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.
"It was a token distribution of the additional compensation cheques to the 1984 riot victims. Each cheque was of Rs.5 lakh. The remaining riot victims will be provided the compensation amount very soon," a home ministry official told IANS.
A hike in compensation to Rs.5 lakh was announced by Rajnath Singh in October, five months after the BJP formed its government at the Centre.
Rajnath Singh distributed the cheques in west Delhi's Tilak Vihar area.
Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung, Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay, west Delhi MP Pravesh Verma and Delhi Chief Secretary D.M. Spolia were present on the occasion.
