Debutants Ranchi Rays reached the final of the third edition of the Hockey India League (HIL) by defeating Uttar Pradesh Wizards in a thrilling encounter which ended in sudden death after the regulation time score read 1-1 here Saturday.
Following the tied score after 60 minutes, the penalty shootout yielded a result of 3-3 which further pushed the game in to sudden game where the Ranchi-based team came out on top at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
The Rays replaced the inaugural edition champions Ranchi Rhinos late last year.
The second semi-final will see defending champions Delhi Waveriders taken on Jaypee Punjab Warriors later Saturday.
The final will take place Sunday.
