The water level and flow of the Chambal river and its tributaries -- Mahi, Sabarmati and Banas -- are set to increase due to very heavy rainfall predicted over the next three days, the Ministry of Water Resources said on Friday.
Warning of rapid rise in the water levels in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat between July 21 and 24, the government said that the levels of reservoirs of the basins concerned were also set to see a rapid increase.
The ministry has warned that since the dams in Kutch and Saurashtra areas, including Machchhu-I and II, are almost filled to their maximum capacity, very strict vigil for the safety of structure and downstream areas was required over the next three days.
The rest of the dams in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have storage available and are filled to less than half of capacity.
"There is a likelihood of heavy rains in Kutch areas and also in Morvi, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar districts of Saurashtra and Kutch regions (in Gujarat).
"Since most of the dams in these areas, such as Machchhu-I and II, Und etc., are very close to their full levels, very strict vigil may please be maintained for the safety of structures as well as downstream areas...with the rainfall likely to occur during the next three days," cautioned a government statement.
Areas coming under the Chambal Basin -- in the districts of Indore, Ujjain, Ratlam, Mandsaur and Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh, Kota and Jhalawar districts in Rajasthan -- are expected to see a rise in water levels.
