Former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf Thursday termed recognition of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan a blunder on the part of Pakistan, media reported Thursday.

He, however, blamed the West and the US for the birth of Al Qaeda and leaving Pakistan high and dry after the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, Dawn online reported.

Speaking at the Youth Parliament Convention in Karachi, he said Pakistan suffered due to wrong policies of the US.

"Some say Taliban are our children and we created them...but it's not true," the former president was quoted as saying.

He said Islamic Mujahideen were introduced to fight against the Soviet Union in 1979.

Musharraf regretted that Mujahideen were not looked after following their "utilisation" against the Soviets.

The former president, however, admitted that recognising the Taliban regime in Afghanistan was a blunder on Pakistan's part.
