Diversified firm Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) on Friday said it has commissioned an energy-efficient and environment-friendly 1150 KTA purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant at Dahej in Gujarat.
"With the commissioning of this plant, Reliance's total PTA capacity will increase to 3.2 MMTPA and global capacity share to 4 percent," the company said in a statement.
PTA is a white coloured organic chemical used in clothing and plastic bottling.
The company is sourcing paraxylene - the key feedstock for the PTA plant from its Jamnagar refinery.
"The PTA plant is also forward integrated with a 650 KTA PET plant in the same complex. The integrated operation will help in lower operating cost and capture full chain margins. Another PTA plant of similar capacity is under construction at the same location. With these capacities, Reliance will be placed among the top five PTA manufacturers globally", it said.
As per RIL, India is the second largest producer of polyester with estimated production of A5.4 million metric tonne per annum (MMTPA) with the market growing annually between 8-10 percent. However, it is still deficit in PTA produce by over 1.5 MMTPA.
"The start-up of the new PTA plant at Dahej will take India closer to self-sufficiency in PTA, in line with the vision of Make in India of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," the firm said.
