The track cycling test event for this year's Olympics was cancelled due to logistical problems at the new velodrome here.

The event, scheduled for April 30 and May 1, will be replaced by a training opportunity from June 25 to 27. Rio 2016 communications chief Mario Andrada said the decision, taken in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), was made due to delays in the installation of support structures, reports Xinhua.

"We had some logistical problems, such as unloading the wood into the venue and to install containers and offices, and we realised that it was too close for us to make sure that the track was perfectly installed," Andrada said on Thursday.

Officials said the velodrome's structure was "fully ready" and awaiting only the assembly of the track. The venue is now expected to be fit for competition by the end of May.

"It's always better to be safe than sorry. In this case, putting down the track in a hurry could cause a risk to the athletes so we took the tough decision. We are 120 percent confident that it will be ready for the Olympics," Andrada said.

Olympic track cycling will be held from August 11 to 16 and will be followed by the Paralympic competition from September 8 to 11.
