Over 100,000 people from 180 countries and regions have already applied to be volunteers at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Brazil has the highest number of candidates so far with 57,871, followed by Russia (5,096), China (4,713) and the US (4,231), organisers said Friday, reports Xinhua.

Organisers expect 70,000 volunteers to participate in the Games. The deadline for registrations closes Nov 15.

"We are very happy that the response has been so positive," said Henrique Gonzalez, the Rio 2016 Organising Committee's human resources director.

"It is really good to see so many people wanting to play an active role in South America's first Olympic and Paralympic Games, and share the thrill of this historic event."

Meanwhile, India's men and the South Korea' s women secured the first two Rio 2016 hockey berths by winning gold medals at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.
