A spectacular Carlos Sanchez volley earned two-time champions River Plate a 1-1 draw with Mexican side Tigres UANL in their Copa Libertadores group match.

Joffre Guerron had given Tigres the lead just before half-time when he pounced on an errant Ramiro Funes Mori header before rounding goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman on Thursday, reports Xinhua.

The goal sparked the hosts into action but Tigres defended firmly until Sanchez's moment of brilliance. Eder Balanta's headed cross from a corner was met by the Uruguayan's horizontal scissor kick that left Guzman with no chance.

The Argentine side was unlucky not to score a winner in the final minutes. Leonardo Pisculichi saw his fizzing drive palmed away by Guzman and moments later Funes Mori's thumping effort from outside the area rebounded off the post.

Tigres are top of Group 6 with four points from two matches while River remain last with one point.

The Copa Libertadores is Latin America's top club competition, comprising teams from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
