An amount of Rs 26 lakh was recovered during a raid at the house of a former Delhi municipal corporation employee in connection with a case against some civic body officials alleged of issuing fake birth and death certificates, the CBI said on Saturday.

"We recovered Rs 26 lakh and some incriminating documents including birth certificates and stamps from the premises of Shobha Chawla, former Sub-Registrar of the Delhi municipal corporation," said a Central Bureau of Investigation official.

The CBI had earlier carried out a surprise check at the office of North MCD's Civil Lines zone on allegations that fake birth and death certificates were being issued by certain officials in collusion with private touts.

During the check, a large number of certificates were found to have been issued by the officials on the strength of fake orders purportedly issued from two sub-divisional magistrates offices in Model Town and Civil Lines area on the payment of alleged illegal gratification.

Chawla's role was noticed during the investigation. Consequently, searches were conducted at her houses in south Delhi's Padma Nagar and Sangam Vihar area, the official said.

The CBI had registered a case on June 22 last year.
