Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Wednesday announced compensation of Rs.5 lakh to the parents of Flight Lieutenant Tapan Kapoor, who died in the crash of a Mi-17 helicopter during a rescue operation in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand.

"The government has decided to release an amount of Rs.5 lakh as ex-gratia amount to the parents," a statement issued by the chief minister's office said.

Dikshit had visited Kapoor's residence in the Walled City Tuesday to express her condolences to his parents. Dikshit described the deceased pilot as a "dedicated and brave son of mother India".

Kapoor, 26, died in the Mi-17 helicopter crash in Gaurikund June 25.

He was on leave and with his family, when he received the call from the Indian Air Force headquarters asking him to join the rescue operations in Uttarakhand.

His last rites were performed in the capital June 28.
