Moscow, Oct 28 (IANS/EFE) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Monday that his country will recognise the results of Sunday's parliamentary elections in Ukraine, where pro-European parties won a convincing victory.
"I believe we shall recognise the results of these elections, because it is very important for us to see that Ukraine finally has authorities who are not involved in internal rifts or tug-of-war, pulling Ukraine to the West or to the East, but occupied with the real problems the country is facing," Lavrov told local agencies.
The foreign minister said he is convinced Russia will find a partner for dialogue in the new government and in the new Verkhovna Rada, or parliament.
"The most important force in the Rada will be the Block of Petro Poroshenko, the Ukrainian president. He is our partner, our president's partner, in negotiations for the settlement of the conflict in the pro-Russian regions of Ukraine." Lavrov added.
Russia's senior diplomat stressed that Poroshenko has always been willing to comply with agreements signed at Minsk, both the ceasefire of Sep 5 and the Memorandum of Peace on the 19th of the same month, to create a demilitarised zone between the Ukrainian army and the pro-Russian separatist forces.
The Kremlin also declared its support last week for the elections called by the pro-Russian rebels Nov 2, in the areas under their control in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Lugansk.
After the vote, Poroshenko said that parties supporting his peace plan and Ukraine's future membership in the European Union, are the ones that won the parliamentary election.
