Russia won its fifth consecutive Olympic title in synchronised swimming in the final at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre here.

The last time another country won gold in the event was in 1996, when the United States swimmers triumphed in the Atlanta Olympics, Efe news reported.

China on Friday matched their silver-medal performance at the 2012 London Games, while Japan finished third to take bronze, their first medal in synchronised swimming in two decades.

Fourth place went to Ukraine and host nation Brazil ended the competition in sixth place.
