Two Russians were arrested Thursday for illegally working as tourist guides at a popular tourist hotspot in Goa, police said.

Pater Kuller and Daria Muchinkova were arrested under the Tourist Trade Act after they were caught guiding a group of Russian tourists at the Dudhsagar waterfalls, 60 km from here, a police spokesperson said.

They were presented before the deputy director of the tourism department and fined Rs.10,000 each. They were also warned not to repeat such illegal activities again, said police inspector Jivba Dalvi.

He said the duo came in India on a tourist visa.

Locally registered guides are up in arms against Russians illegally working as guides, who cater to the nearly one lakh Russian tourists who frequent the state annually.
