Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the rumour mongering which triggered a hike in price of salt in some parts of India was caused by vested interests hurt by demonetisation.

In Goa to digitally lay the foundation for two major projects, Modi said vested interests who were reeling in shock by his decision to spike the 500 and 1,000 rupee notes had spread rumours to trigger panic.

"That is why they start rumours... Someone said salt has gone expensive. This is done because they are going bankrupt," he said, asking people not to believe in rumours.

Modi said his crackdown was against people who had illegally accumulated wealth for over 70 years. "Honest people should not worry."
