The Supreme Court Thursday expressed satisfaction over probes by the Special Investigation Team in nine cases related to the 2002 riots in Gujarat post Godhra.

The bench of Justice H.L. Dattu, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and Justice M.Y. Eqbal appreciated the work done by the SIT headed by former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director R.K. Raghvan as it perused the SIT's Feb 27 status report.

The court was told that of the nine cases referred to it, trials have ended in six, leading to conviction of the accused. In the remaining three cases, trials were in advanced stages and would be over soon.

The court directed the listing of the matter Aug 26.

The SIT had given clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his alleged inaction during the riots.

The nine cases investigated by the SIT included those related to riots in Gulbarg Society, Sardarpura, Naroda Gaon, Naroda Patiya, Machipith, Ode, Tarsali, Pandarwada and Raghavapura.
