A Gurgaon based Right to Information activist on Friday filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the government's directive making Aadhaar card mandatory for creating digital locker.

The central government on July 1 announced the service of digital locker for the safekeeping of valuable documents while launching Digital India Week.

Petitioner Sudhir Yadav in his petition has alleged that despite the clear order of the Supreme Court, the Narendra's Modi government has announced a new service based on Aadhaar card.

If any person wants to create an account on the website digitallocker.gov.in, he has to provide the Aadhaar card number. This is clearly a violation of the Supreme court ruling that Aadhaar card is not mandatory, Yadav said.

The petitioner has alleged that due to this directive of the central government, the right of equality guaranteed by the constitution is under threat.
