F1 world champion Michael Schumacher was in "coma" after a skiing accident Sunday in the Alps in France, a media report said.

The 44-year-old German F1 world champion suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and was in a "severe head coma" when he was transferred to University Hospital Center of Grenoble in France, reported channel BFM citing RMC Sport.

The hospital said in a statement that Schumacher "required an immediate neurosurgical operation", Xinhua reported Monday citing the media report.

The accident took place when Schumacher was skiing in Meribel resort. He fell sharply and his head hit a rock.

He was immediately transported by helicopter to a hospital.
