Security has been beefed up in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district ahead of the five-day festival beginning Tuesday with thousands of security personnel keeping a hawk-eyed vigil to thwart any possible threats.
Officials said Mathura was on alert following inputs from the intelligence agencies fearing terrorist attacks during the festival season when lakhs of pilgrims would be in Mathura and Vrindavan.
Sri Krishna Janmbhoomi complex is under the National Security Guard watch. Additional forces have been deployed around Vrindavan's Banke Bihari temple, officials said.
Dhanteras is being celebrated Tuesday followed by Narak Chaturdashi or Roop Chaudas Wednesday, Diwali Thursday, Govardhan Puja and Annakoot Friday followed by Yam Dwitiya Saturday when people would take a dip in Yamuna river.
