Pakistani police on Monday rescued seven policemen kidnapped on Sunday in the country's Punjab province, the media reported.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramiz Bokhari said that the policemen conducted a search operation in the area in Punjab to find the abductees in the wee hours of the day, Dunya News reported.

The officer said that the policemen were kidnapped by dacoits during a boat patrol in the Indus river on Sunday, adding that the kidnappers took the policemen to their hideouts located on a small island in the river.

Local police cordoned off a section of the river on Monday and rescued the abductees who were tied to trees at the island.

Bokhari said the dacoits escaped by swimming through the river, taking advantage of the darkness. A search operation to catch the dacoits is underway in the area.
