Seven automotive design and testing centres would be operational by December for safety of vehicles, especially cars, an official said on Friday.

"The seven facilities are coming up at Bengaluru, Chennai, Indore, Manesar, Pune, Rai Bareli and Silchar under the national automotive testing and R&D infrastructure project (Natrip) for safety tests, including frontal and side crash for vehicles," Natrip chief executive Sanjay Bandopadhyay said at seminar "Road Safety - Time for Action" here.

The union road transport and highways ministry has mandated vehicle makers to comply with international standards for safety of drivers and passengers and set October 2017 deadline for new vehicles.

"The infotronics laboratory and crash testing labs will be operational by June and the high-speed testing track will come up in two years," said Bandopadhyay.
