A Delhi court on Thursday awarded seven years in jail to gangster Neeraj Bawana for illegal possession of firearms.

Additional Sessions Judge Reetesh Singh also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on Bawana.

On August 31, the court had acquitted Bawana of attempt to murder and obstructing and assaulting a public servant and deterring him while discharging his duty.

However, he was convicted for illegal possession of arms.

The court acquitted his associate Mohammed Rashid of all charges.

Bawana, one of Delhi's most dreaded criminals who ran an extortion racket targeting businessmen and was wanted in many cases of murder, was arrested on April 7 last year from Mundka in west Delhi.

Police said the 28-year-old was arrested after he tried to escape by opening fire at a police team but was overpowered.

Several other cases against him are pending in various courts of Delhi.
