P.D.Rai, first-time MP of the Sikkim Democratic Front, has participated in the maximum number of parliamentary debates and Badruddin Ajmal, MP of Assam United Democratic Front, has the best record of questions asked, an analysis on the performance of northeast MPs in parliament showed Tuesday.

According to the PRS Legislative Research data, Rai has participated in 70 debates in the Lok Sabha when the national average was just 38. The MP closely following Rai is Raman Deka of the Bharatiya Janata Party from Assam. He has participated in 62 debates.

Ajmal, MP from Assam, has asked 320 questions while the national average is 300. Khagen Das from Tripura, representing the Communist party of India (Marxist), follows at 310.

On attendance percentage, the MPs from Manipur score the highest. Thangso Baite and Thokchom Meiny, both Congress MPs, have attendance percentage of 98 and 99 percent respectively. The national average stands at 76 percent.

Bijoya Chakravarty of the BJP, an MP from Assam, has introduced the maximum number of private member's bills at four, while the national average for introduction of private member bills is 0.8.

The state wise data shows that MPs from Manipur have the highest number of attendance 98 percent, while Sikkim MPs have the best record in terms of questions asked (180) and debates participated in (70).

The eight northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura have 25 Lok Sabha constituencies between them.

Debates, questions and private member's bills are important mechanisms by which parliament members fulfill their responsibilities. Attendance during parliament sessions also indicates an MP's commitment to give effect to his role.
