The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) on Friday launched a set of two coins featuring native orchids in colour.
They are the fifth and last in an annual series that pays tribute to the beauty of orchids that once thrived in Singapore. Some of these orchids can still be found today, The Straits Times reported.
The 2015 Native Orchids of Singapore coins feature the dendrobium leonis and the dendrobium secundum orchids. The former has creamy yellow petals tinged with red, while the latter, commonly termed the "toothbrush orchid", is known for its flower sprays, which consist of purplish pink flowers with orange lips.
On the reverse side of the coin is the Singapore Coat of Arms, bearing the year 2015. A portion of the circumference of each coin in the native orchid series is semi-rimless.
They can be purchased individually or as a coin set, and each coin has a face value of 5 Singapore dollars ($3.60).
There will be 10,000 pieces of each individual coin design, 3,000 pieces of the two-in-one coin set and 500 pieces of specially selected coins in each design encased in a capsule.
The coins will be issued on November 13.
