German football club Bayer Leverkusen on Friday signed Slovenian international Kevin Kampl from league rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Midfielder Kampl, who joined Bundesliga side Dortmund in January 2015, moved to league rivals Leverkusen after putting pen to paper on a deal until June 2020. Kampl played from 1997 until 2011 for Leverkusen's youth teams, reports Xinhua.

"I'm looking forward to my comeback for Leverkusen, where I made first steps as a young player. It is great to play for Leverkusen's professional team in the Bundesliga and Champions League," the 24-year-old said.

He is said to replace Heung Min Son, who joined English Premier League (EPL) outfit Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the day.

Kampl made only 14 appearances for Dortmund since his arrival in January.

"We would have gladly signed Kevin last winter. However, I am delighted that it worked out a half-year later. He is a great player with whom we will have a lot of fun," Leverkusen's coach Roger Schmidt, who coached Kampl at Austrian side RB Salzburg, told the club's official home page.

After two straight victories in the 2015-16 Bundesliga season, Leverkusen face defending champions Bayern Munich in the third round on Saturday.
