Police in Ghaziabad seized a huge stock of Indian-made foreign liquor valued at around Rs.50 lakh at the UP Gate on the Delhi border while it was being smuggled to be distributed during the panchayat elections.
Police said the truck loaded with liquor was on its way towards Ghaziabad on national highway 24, when they stopped the vehicle and checked it. They found the liquor in 890 cartons.
The driver, on being questioned, said the liquor was being taken to Arunachal Pradesh.
But on sustained interrogation, the driver confessed that he was given fake documents by the transporter to dodge police.
He said the liquor was actually being taken to Bijnore to woo voters in the panchayat elections.
"The consignment was booked by the transport company's Chandigarh office. The documents seem fake since Chandigarh to Bijnore is a direct route via Ambala, Yamuna Nagar and Muzaffar Nagar. But since the truck was going from Delhi to Ghaziabad, it raised several questions and these enabled police to question the driver, who confessed," said Superintendent of Police (City) Ajay Pal.
He said police were trying to catch the mastermind.
