Congress president Sonia Gandhi Monday congratulated the people of Telangana which officially became India's 29th state, and gave her party the credit for its formation.
"I congratulate the people of Telangana on the occasion of it becoming the 29th state of the Indian union," Gandhi said in a statement issued by the party.
Crediting her party, she said: "It was the Indian National Congress that finally decided to reorganise the state of Andhra Pradesh in 2013 to fulfill the democratic aspirations of the people of Telangana."
Gandhi said the previous Congress-led UPA government had ensured that there would be vast economic opportunities for the residual state of Andhra Pradesh as well.
