Congress president Sonia Gandhi was admitted to the AIIMS here Monday night after she complained of chest pain in the Lok Sabha while the house debated the food security bill.

Gandhi, 66, left the lower house even as opposition-backed amendments on her pet legislation were being put to vote, accompanied by central minister Kumari Selja.

Gandhi appeared to stumble as she walked down the parliament steps. She quickly took hold of Selja's left hand and recovered her poise. Selja and her son and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi flanked her in the car.

A Congress leader who did not want to be quoted by name said Gandhi had chest pain. He did not provide details.

Informed sources said Gandhi, who heads the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), had been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for observation.
