Former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh has said that Sonia Gandhi should continue as Congress president as Rahul Gandhi needs "more experience" before heading the party.

"Sonia Gandhi should continue working as party president," he told CNN-IBN.

On why he was opposing Rahul Gandhi becoming the Congress chief, Singh said for Rahul Gandhi, there was a lot to learn before he really takes over as the party president.

"You learn as you grow... it has to be gradual change," he said, asking why can't Rahul continue as vice-president.

"In 10 years, you cannot be captain of the ship. Rahul needs more experience and needs to travel when he is back. I sent an e-mail to him when he went on leave asking him to come back. Told him he was wrong. He never replied," Singh said.

Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi compliment each other and can work as a team for the party, he added.

"... Why can't they work as a team? Priyanka is all for her brother," Singh said when asked who can lead the party better.
