Congress chief Sonia Gandhi Monday volunteered to step down from her position after the party's worst performance in the Lok Sabha elections, Congress spokesperson Janardan Dwivedi said.
"I feel that the changes I planned failed to strengthen the party, and we would not have had to face such a situation. I accept responsibility for the defeat and I volunteer to step down," Dwivedi quoted Sonia Gandhi as telling the Congress Working Committee which met to analyse the poll debacle.
In her opening remarks, Gandhi described the Lok Sabha results in which the Congress got just 44 seats, as "disappointing".
She also termed the "polarization" in the country due to the BJP campaign as "worrisome".
