Legendary actor Soumitra Chatterjee was among a group of intellectuals, politicians and eminent personalities who on Monday held a protest meet over the flyover collapse, seeking punishment for those responsible for the ghastly tragedy that claimed at least 26 lives.
A portion of the under-construction Vivekananda Road flyover crashed on May 31, killing 26 people besides injuring nearly 90 others.
"It's a shocking tragedy to say the least. Whoever is responsible for this, whether any organisation, a political party, they should be punished. I strongly condemn this," said Chatterjee, calling upon the people to build a protest movement.
Former Supreme Court judge A.K. Ganguly, former city mayor and CPI-M leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, Congress leader and former union minister Deepa Dasmunsi were among those present.
The city police have slapped several charges including that of murder against Hyderabad-based IVRCL engaged in constructing the flyover and arrested four of its officials.
