Addis Ababa, Aug 18 (IANS/EFE) The South Sudanese government signed a peace agreement with rebel forces in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, following intense negotiations.

In the presence of several regional leaders, secretary-general of the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement, or SPLM, Pagan Amun and rebel leader and former vice-president Riek Machar signed an agreement to end the civil war that has endured for more than 18 months.

The details of the agreement are as of yet unclear, but the latest accord inked by the mediating Intergovernmental Authority on Development, or IGAD, includes a proposal for a national unity government with power quotas for both sides.
