Uttar Pradesh's ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) on Monday suspended its legislator Rampal Yadav for allegedly working against the party interests.

Announcing the suspension, PWD Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav said that the Sitapur legislator's son Jitendra Yadav has been expelled from the party.

This is the third major crackdown of the party leadership in the past ten days. It has earlier cracked whip on its legislator from Bijnore and against some other party leaders of prominence.

The party had also expelled two close proteges of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav but their expulsion was revoked a few days later after he threw a tantrum and refused to take part in the Saifai Mahotsava, the annual cultural event of the family at their native village.

Sources say the party high command has decided to act tough against some of its leaders who did not follow the party line in the recently-concluded Zila Panchayat head elections.
