Bangladesh's tourist police initiative, that began in the popular Cox's Bazar beach town this year as a pilot project, will soon become an official force across the entire country, said an visiting official Saturday.

In order to ensure safety of tourists, a special police outfit was set up earlier in 2013 that included a unique police station in Cox's Bazar catering only to travellers. Now the country's tourism ministry will establish more such tourist police across Bangladesh.

"The tourist police initiative has been hugely successful in Cox's Bazar. Now we will spread out to other parts of the country. This is a speedy way to look after problems of the travellers," Nazmanara Khanum, a deputy secretary in Bangladesh ministry of civil aviation and tourism, told IANS.

According to the official, Bangladesh will stress on developing its riverine tourist areas and the mangrove forests of Sunderbans.
