A special campaign through street plays, songs and slogans to sensitise people about violence against women was launched here Tuesday.

The "Awaz Uthao" campaign organised camps at various centres in the capital. The participants were told about toll free phone numbers 100, 181 and 1090 which they could call during any emergency situation.

The campaign was been organised by Navjyoti Development Society in collaboration with Mission Convergence, and supported by the women and child development department under the Delhi government.

Participants said the campaign helped change people's attitude towards women's security.

"For the last one year, I have been associated with this group. I have noticed several positive changes in my life. I now feel safer and more empowered. I educate women and girls on how to prevent crimes in public places," said Rajkumari, a participant.

Nasim Khan, nodal officer for the Awaz Uthao campaign said: "Now the time has come to speak out about the problems women are facing anywhere whether it is at home, on the roads, anywhere."

Meanwhile, the Navjyoti Development Society said crimes against women can be stopped only with the full participation and cooperation of police and community members.

"Any government department and police can never end the violence. They need the help of community members in this process. Without the help of community members, wiping out crime against women is simply impossible", said Rajendra Daghwal of the society.

Daghwal said it is only when women come forward and take the initiative to fight crimes against them that such crimes can be curbed.
