A 55-year-old Delhi Police sub-inspector was crushed to death by a speeding truck in the capital's Alipur area, police said Friday. The driver was arrested from the spot.

Hazarilal was posted at west Delhi's Bhalswa Dairy police station and was on his way to Narela on a motorcycle when he was hit by the truck from behind. The accident occurred at around 10 p.m. Thursday while the victim was on duty.

As soon as Hazarilal stopped his motorbike at a traffic signal that had turned red, he was hit and run over by the speeding truck coming from behind, police said.

A police van chased the truck and arrested the driver Rajat Kumar, 19. He was heading towards Himachal Pradesh from Delhi.

"The truck driver was arrested and the vehicle impounded a few minutes after the incident," Deputy Commissioner of Police N. Gnana Sambandan told IANS.

Hazarilal, who joined the Delhi Police in 1977, was from Haryana's Sonepat town. His family lives in his native village while he lived in the residential quarters of the Bhalswa Dairy police station.

According to official data, nine policemen -- six constables, two sub-inspectors and one assistant sub-inspector -- have so far been killed in road accidents this year.

Delhi Police lost four officers in 2013, one in 2012 and one in 2011.

According to Delhi Police, the kin of all the deceased personnel have been provided ex-gratia amount by the force but in some cases, the lieutenant governor too has given Rs.1 crore as compensation.
