In the wake of a terror attack inside Canada's parliament, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa Thursday expressed concern over the escalating terrorism in the world.

The president in a Twitter message said it was "very disturbing to see increasing terrorist acts in many countries, now even in Canada", and called on the countries to unite in fighting terrorism, Xinhua reported.

"We must unite as equal partners to fight this menace," Rajapaksa said.

A gunman Wednesday killed a soldier at an Ottawa war memorial, before dying in a shootout with police inside the Canadian parliament.

Sri Lanka ended a nearly three-decade-long civil war with the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2009.
