Sri Lanka's main opposition, the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) on Friday sought an explanation from Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe over rising attacks by underworld groups in the island nation.
As a result of the rise in murders and attacks in recent weeks, fear prevails among the people during the period ahead of parliamentary elections, Xinhua quoted UPFA general secretary Susil Premajayantha as saying.
"The prime minister has to give an explanation over this fear psychosis which has spread in the country, especially during the election period," Premajayantha said.
Parliamentary elections are due to be held on August 17, ten months ahead of schedule, to elect 225 members to Sri Lanka's 15th Parliament
The UPFA also sought an explanation over a shoot out in Colombo recently, in which two people were killed and at least 13 others injured.
