Normal life was affected on Friday in the hill districts of Manipur on a call for a 15-hour general strike by tribal organisations to commemorate the killing of nine people in police action in the state last year.

Life was affected in Churachandpur district, where the killings took place, and in Tamenglong district as government offices, educational institutes, markets and other commercial establishments were shut.

In Tamenglong, no traffic was seen along national highway-37 during the strike. Government offices and markets were closed but educational institutes functioned normally.

The strike that began from Thursday midnight also disrupted normal life in Chandel.

Nine tribals were killed in an alleged police crackdown in Churachandpur district over six months ago during the tribals' protest against three Bills passed in the Manipur assembly on August 31.
