Buenos Aires, July 13 (IANS/EFE) Argentina, one of the world's leading food exporters, saw its main agricultural ports shut down Friday thanks to a dockworkers' strike.

The walkout blocked 80 percent of the exports in the sector that were scheduled for Friday by forcing more than 100 freighters nationwide to postpone their sailing dates, according to media accounts.

The strike was called to demand better pay.

In some cities such as Buenos Aires the protest was accompanied by demonstrations and traffic blockades in which hundreds of workers took part.

The strike coincides with the official start of the electoral campaigns for the legislative primary elections Aug 11 and is the second massive union protest of the week, following the strike called last Monday by the truckers union that caused grave traffic problems and fuel shortages in several areas around the country.
