Iran's Sunni rebels kidnapped five border guards in Sistan and Baluchestan province of the country, media reported Sunday.

The Iranian forces started search operations in the province after being informed that five border guards were missing, Xinhua reported citing the Fars news agency.

The kidnapped guards have been taken to Pakistan, according to the agency.

The Jeish-al-Adl Sunni group, based in Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the abduction by posting a photo of the kidnapped guards on its Twitter account Saturday.

Sistan and Baluchestan province, mostly populated by the Sunni Muslims, has been the scene of clashes between the Sunni rebels and the Iranian security forces in the past.
