Cairo, Sep 16 (IANS/EFE) A Syrian Air Force warplane was downed Tuesday in al-Raqqa city in northern Syria, a stronghold of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said.

SOHR said the plane crashed into a house where civilians were living and several people from the same family were killed or injured.

The Syrian Army carried out Tuesday at least five bombing raids in the city and its suburbs.

In the governorate of the same name, clashes occurred between the Kurdish People's Protection Units (PPU) and IS militants, to the west of Tal Ebeid town.

Several clashes also took place close to Tal Khamis town in al-Hasakah governorate, where 14 IS militants were killed, according to SOHR.

Kurdish militants seized control of Sharmog, near Tal Khamis, to join a list of 14 towns which the Kurds have taken over in the past three days.

The PPU is one of the militias fighting to halt the IS's advances in Syria.

At a meeting in Paris Monday, more than two dozen countries vowed to support neighbouring Iraq in its fight against the IS on its territory.

But they did not address the situation in Syria where the IS originated as a group battling to overthrow the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
