Legendary tabla player Shankar Ghosh has slipped into coma, his family members said on Wednesday.
He is under treatment at a private hospital following heart complications. On Monday, his condition deteriorated further. He was under constant observation in the ICU.
"He is in coma," his son Bickram Ghosh, a noted percussionist, told IANS.
The 80-year-old exponent of the Farrukhabad gharana of Hindustani classical music underwent an angioplasty at the hospital, where he was admitted two days ago.
A recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1999-2000, Ghosh has taken forward the concept of tabla ensembles -- large number of tabla players showcasing their talent together.
He has toured a number of countries to play solo or with celebrated classical musicians like sitarists Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Vilayat Khan and violinist Pandit V.G. Jog and earned rave reviews.
