Taiwan's election commission on Friday formally announced three pairs of candidates to run for the 2016 leader's election.
Eric Chu and his running mate Wang Ju-hsuan will represent the Kuomintang, the island's current ruling party, while the other pairs are Tsai Ing-wen of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and her running mate Chen Chien-je, as well as James Soong of the People First Party and his running mate Hsu Hsin-ying, Xinhua news agency reported.
The election campaign will start on Saturday and last till January 15 next year, the commission said.
In addition to the leader, Taiwan residents will also elect legislators.
The elections are scheduled for January 16.
From December 25 to January 8, the candidates will participate in four television debates.
