Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou is scheduled to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Saturday in Singapore, an official statement here said on Thursday.

Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Hsia Li-yan said the meeting, the first in 66 years between leaders of Taiwan and China, will mark a historic milestone in cross-strait relations.

President Ma will convene an international media conference regarding the details of the meeting on Thursday.

Minister Hsia said the major objective of the meeting will be to consolidate cross-strait peace and maintain the status quo.

Underlining Taiwan's stand that the meeting can only proceed under conditions of equal and dignified status, Hsia said no agreement will be signed and no joint statement issued after the Ma-Xi meeting.

The minister noted that the peaceful and stable development of cross-strait relations is in the interests of each side, as well as the international community.

President Ma's aim, keeping in view Taiwan's long-term future, is to promote the welfare of the people, establish a basis for institutionalised leaders' meetings, and advance mutual trust between the two sides, he said.
