In a first-of-its-kind move in the country, new Mayor of Agra Navin Jain has launched an initiative to provide gas heaters to the public at 10 major city intersections this winter.
The move comes in the wake of the ban on the burning of firewood and cow dung cakes in the eco-sensitive Taj Trapezium Zone.
Jain said the gas heaters would not only provide better quality heat but also ensure there was no smoke or pollution.
"In the first list are government hospitals and railway stations," said Municipal Commissioner Arun Prakash.
Each gas heater would have a municipal employee to take care of it, he added.
